Presentation Topic: The Economics of the Dark Web

The Dark Net has become infamous as a haven for cyber criminals, but its business models and trust expectations are not broadly understood. Research gives some light into this anonymous environment to explain both how it works, as well as the economics that underpin the commercial models it supports.

This seminar will present:

• The specialist cryptographic tools used to access the Dark Net
• The role of cryptocurrencies
• The entrepreneurship of its marketplaces
• Trust modelling and the pursuit of profit
• Implications for cyber insurance

Speaker: Gerard Ward

Gerard has over 25 years' experience as a senior project manager throughout Asia Pacific managing complex IT initiatives. He is currently advancing a PhD in cybersecurity at the University of Auckland business school. Prior to commencing his PhD, Gerard led the NZ division of an international insurance services firm managing cyber insurance claims.
