With his 7-year term as Controller and Auditor-General coming to an end in early July, John Ryan shares his thoughts on public trust, accountability and the changing role of his Office to meet the needs of a 21st Century New Zealand. His term has spanned the Covid pandemic, widespread reforms in the public sector, two general elections and a challenging fiscal and operational context for central and local government. Join Hapai Public and the Victoria University of Wellington's School of Government and the Centre for Public Law to hear John's thoughts on topics ranging from public trust to accountability and a myriad of things in-between. This session will be facilitated by Emeritus Professor Jonathan Boston, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions of John. John Ryan - Controller and Auditor-General John Ryan began his term as Controller and Auditor-General on 2 July 2018. John graduated from Victoria University of Wellington with a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration. He studied strategic leadership at Oxford University and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has held senior executive positions in a range of public sector organisations and in the private sector. His experience spans corporate, regulatory and operational management, and assurance. During his career of more than 40 years, John has led some of the largest programmes of capital works in the public sector, large-scale change management, and significant regulatory reform. John has also contributed widely to his community. Before his appointment, he was a board member of the Royal New Zealand Ballet, the New Zealand Festival, and the Wellington Jazz Festival.Hāpai Public: Reflections on 7 Years as the Auditor General
